Underground tank detection on the South Shore for homes built in the 1950s to 1970s
Bungalows and houses built on the South Shore between the 1950s and 1970s were often heated with oil originally. Many have since been converted, but the buried tank was not always removed. Our ground-penetrating radar survey locates it or documents its absence in the scanned area, and the PDF report reaches you within 24 hours.

Why these homes are at higher risk
These decades match the major residential growth of the suburbs, at a time when oil was a common heating method. When an owner switched to electricity, they often left the tank in place, especially if it was buried.
The framework has changed since then. In Quebec, since December 31, 2023, it has been prohibited to install an oil-fired heating appliance in an existing building or to replace one with another fossil fuel appliance, and repairing appliances more than 20 years old is prohibited (1). Conversions are accelerating, and with them come questions about tanks left in the ground.
Clues to check before calling
- A fill pipe or vent near the foundation
- A patched opening in the basement wall
- Invoices or a certificate from a former oil supplier
- A mention in the pre-purchase inspection or the seller's declaration
What we deliver
The report locates each target consistent with a tank, estimates its dimensions and the depth to its top, and flags other structures in the area, such as a pit or an old garage foundation. It does not comment on tightness or contents; a characterization may be required before removal.
Frequently asked questions
Can a tank be under the paved driveway? Yes. Asphalt complicates the reading somewhat, but ground-penetrating radar goes through it. The report specifies the areas where interpretation is less clear.
What should I do if a tank is detected? Hire a specialized contractor for the removal; our report gives them the position and depth to plan the excavation.
