A city made up of several former municipalities
Longueuil grew out of a seigneury established starting in 1657, which split over the centuries into separate municipalities, including Longueuil, Jacques-Cartier, Montréal-Sud, Greenfield Park, Saint-Hubert and LeMoyne (1). Since 2006, the city has had three boroughs, and the Vieux-Longueuil borough also includes the former town of LeMoyne (2).
For a survey, this heritage matters. A territory born from several municipalities was not built all at once, and from one area to the next, private service connections do not necessarily follow the same logic. Utilities added after construction (pool cable, drain, irrigation) often do not appear on any plan.
Lead is the other issue in older homes. According to the City, lead service lines are found mainly in buildings constructed between 1940 and 1950, and up to about 1970 (3). Its 2020-2030 action plan targeted nearly 22,000 buildings with eight dwellings or fewer built before 1970, and replacing the private portion of the service line remains the owner's responsibility (4).
What we locate on a lot in Longueuil
- The private water service line of a pre-1970 home, before your plumber replaces it
- The power cable for a pool, a spa or a shed, often run without a plan
- The foundation drain and the connection toward the street, before an addition
- An old buried oil tank on a residential lot
- Conduits embedded in a garage or commercial slab, before core drilling
Before a pool or an excavation in your yard
The City reminds residents that a permit is required to install a new pool or build the enclosure around it. The City also advises checking with utility companies whether there are pipes, cables or easements on the lot before choosing the location (5). A request to Info-Excavation covers public utilities, up to the property line.
What remains to be located are your own utilities. Do the survey before setting the pool location or signing the addition plan, not once the excavator is on the lot. Provide access to the basement, near the shut-off valve, to make radio detection easier.

Frequently asked questions
Is my water service line made of lead if my home was built before 1970? Not necessarily, but the risk is higher for buildings constructed between 1940 and 1970 (3). A visual check near the main valve in the basement is the first step. If the private line needs to be replaced, our survey shows your plumber its path and estimated depth, which limits the area to excavate in the yard.
Is Info-Excavation enough to install a pool in Longueuil? No. Info-Excavation covers the utilities of member companies, up to the property line. The cable that already powers your shed, the drain or the private water service line are not located by this service. A private survey finds them and marks them on the ground. You get a reply within 24 to 48 business hours after your request.
